The foundation for lifelong success is built long before a child enters a classroom. Research consistently shows that early literacy skills are among the strongest predictors of academic achievement, high school graduation, employment, health, and civic engagement. Children who are not reading proficiently by the end of third grade are significantly more likely to struggle academically, leave school without a diploma, and experience poorer economic outcomes later in life.
Studies have also found strong correlations between low literacy, school dropout rates, juvenile delinquency, and incarceration, with an estimated 85% of youth involved in the juvenile justice system classified as functionally low literate and more than 70% of incarcerated adults reading below a fourth-grade level.
The good news is that these outcomes are not inevitable. When parents and caregivers are equipped with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to support literacy development from an early age, children are more likely to enter school ready to learn, remain engaged throughout their education, and achieve greater success as adults. At The Literacy Roots Project, we believe that investing in families during a child's earliest years is one of the most effective ways to create lasting change for children, families, and communities.

The Literacy Roots Project exists to break cycles of educational inequity by empowering families to become active partners in their children's learning and development. Our mission is to equip parents and caregivers with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to foster early literacy, strengthen family engagement, and support children's success in school and life.
Through innovative family-centered programs, literacy enrichment opportunities, and collaborative community partnerships, we address barriers that disproportionately impact underserved families and help ensure that every child has the opportunity to enter school prepared to learn, grow, and succeed. By nurturing literacy at its roots—the family—we create lasting change that strengthens children, families, and communities for generations.
